Pregnancy and Post-Partum Rehabilitation
Physical Therapy during pregnancy and post-partum- many changes occur to the body during pregnancy, some of them result in pain and discomfort. All of the therapists at Lakeview Physical Therapy, P.C. are experts at evaluating and treating pregnancy-related conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, low-back pain and “sciatica”, pubic symphysis dysfunction, coccyx (tailbone) injury, diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles), neck and rib cage pain, bowel and bladder complaints, episiotomy or cesarean section scars, and dyspareunia or other sexual dysfunction.
Diastasis recti is the partial or complete thinning or separation of the rectus abdominis, or “six-pack” muscles, which meet at the midline of your stomach. Diastasis recti is very common during and following pregnancy. This is because the uterus stretches the muscles in the abdomen to accommodate your growing baby. If you feel a widening or see a “doming” more than six weeks postpartum, you should have an individualized assessment and exercise prescription that is compatible with your lifestyle and goals. Most information available on the internet on this topic is at best outdated and is often inaccurate.
